Merom
Merom names a body of water in the upper Jordan region where Joshua broke the northern confederacy headed by Jabin, king of Hazor.
The Waters of Merom
The northern kings gather at this site to make a stand against Israel: "And all these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel" (Josh 11:5). Yahweh's word to Joshua promises the outcome and prescribes Israel's treatment of the spoils: "And Yahweh said to Joshua, Don't be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time I will deliver them up all slain before Israel: you will hock their horses, and burn their chariots with fire" (Josh 11:6). Joshua's surprise attack on the encampment turns the location into the place where the coalition is broken: "So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them" (Josh 11:7).
