Mikneiah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Mikneiah is a Levite who served at the bringing-up of the ark, named in David's roster of singers and doorkeepers.

A Levite of the second degree

When David assigned the Levitical music for the ark's procession, the chiefs Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were paired with a second tier of brothers. The list closes, "and with them their brothers of the second degree, Zechariah, son, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the doorkeepers" (1 Ch 15:18). Mikneiah is set apart there with the doorkeepers of the assembly.

A harpist on the Sheminith

A few verses later the same Mikneiah is given a musical post. The instruments are divided: cymbals of bronze for the chief singers, psalteries set to Alamoth for one group, and harps for another. "And Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps set to the Sheminith, to lead" (1 Ch 15:21). The same name that opens the door also leads with the harp.
