Miter
The miter — rendered "turban" in UPDV — is the linen headpiece prescribed for the high priest's vestments. It carries the inscribed gold plate that designates the wearer as holy to Yahweh, and a prophetic oracle later treats its removal as the sign of Israel's collapsed kingship and priesthood.
Among Aaron's Holy Garments
The turban is named at the start of the list of priestly vestments: "And these are the garments which they will make: a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a coat of checker work, a turban, and a belt: and they will make holy garments for Aaron your brother, and his sons, that he may serve me in the priest's office" (Ex 28:4). At Aaron's investiture it is set on his head together with the holy crown: "and you will set the turban on his head, and put the holy crown on the turban" (Ex 29:6).
The Gold Plate of Holiness
A gold plate engraved like a signet is fastened to the front of the turban: "And you will make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, like the engravings of a signet, HOLY TO YAHWEH. And you will put it on a lace of blue, and it will be on the turban; on the forefront of the turban it will be. And it will be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron will bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the sons of Israel will hallow in all their holy gifts; and it will be always on his forehead, that they may be accepted before Yahweh" (Ex 28:36–38). The turban itself is woven of fine linen: "And you will weave the coat in checker work of fine linen, and you will make a turban of fine linen, and you will make a belt, the work of the embroiderer" (Ex 28:39).
The Vestments Constructed
The construction account confirms the same materials and the same fastening: "And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it a writing, like the engravings of a signet, HOLY TO YAHWEH. And they tied to it a lace of blue, to fasten it on the turban above; as Yahweh commanded Moses" (Ex 39:30–31). The fine-linen turban itself is part of the same set: "and the turban of fine linen, and the goodly head-tires of fine linen, and the linen breeches of fine twined linen," (Ex 39:28).
Removed in the Oracle Against Judah's Prince
In Ezekiel's oracle the turban is taken off as a sign of judgment on Judah's leadership: "thus says the Sovereign Yahweh: Remove the turban, and take off the crown; this [will be] no more the same; exalt that which is low, and abase that which is high" (Eze 21:26).
