Neariah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two men named Neariah are recorded in the Chronicler's genealogies — one in the post-exilic Davidic line, the other a Simeonite captain in the expedition to mount Seir.

Son of Shemaiah in the Davidic line

The first Neariah appears in the descendants of Zerubbabel, listed among the sons of Shemaiah: "And the sons of Shecaniah: Shemaiah. And the sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, and Igal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shaphat, six. And the sons of Neariah: Elioenai, and Hizkiah, and Azrikam, three" (1Ch 3:22-23). His three sons — Elioenai, Hizkiah, and Azrikam — extend the line one further generation in the Davidic register.

A Simeonite captain at mount Seir

The second Neariah is named as one of four leaders of a Simeonite raiding party: "And some of them, even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to mount Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, and Neariah, and Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi" (1Ch 4:42). He is grouped with Pelatiah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, all sons of Ishi, and shares command of the five hundred men who go up against Seir.
