Nebat
Nebat is the father of Jeroboam, the Ephraimite who later becomes the first king of the breakaway northern kingdom. He is named only in the patronymic "Jeroboam the son of Nebat," which fixes Jeroboam's lineage at his first appearance in 1 Kings.
Father of Jeroboam
Jeroboam is introduced into the narrative of Solomon's reign with his patronymic, his tribe, his town, and his mother all attached: "And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a slave of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, he also lifted up his hand against the king" (1Ki 11:26). When Solomon dies and the assembly at Shechem becomes the occasion for Jeroboam's return, the same patronymic carries him forward: "And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt," (1Ki 12:2).
