Nimrim

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Nimrim is a watered place in Moab, named only in two prophetic oracles against Moab. In both passages its waters appear as a marker of pasturage now drying up under judgment.

Waters of Moab Going Dry

Isaiah's oracle pictures the springs failing and the green ground gone: "For the waters of Nimrim will be desolate; for the grass is withered away, the tender grass fails, there is no green thing" (Isa 15:6).

Jeremiah's parallel oracle ties Nimrim into a circuit of Moabite cities mourning together: "From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, to Eglath-shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also will become desolate" (Jer 48:34). The waters that gave Moab its meadows are the same waters whose loss carries the lament from town to town.
