Nod

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Nod is the land where Cain settled after he was driven out from before Yahweh, named only once and located east of Eden.

Cain's land of exile

The single mention of the place comes at the close of the judgment scene that follows the killing of Abel: "And Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden" (Ge 4:16). Two motions are paired in the verse — Cain's departure from Yahweh's presence and his settlement in a region east of Eden — and the name Nod is fixed to that destination.
