Onam

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two men bear the name Onam in the genealogies — one Horite, one Judahite.

A Son of Shobal

The first Onam belongs to the Horite line of Esau. He appears among the sons of Shobal in the table of Edom: "And these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, Shepho and Onam" (Gen 36:23). The same family is repeated in the Chronicler's recapitulation, with minor spelling variants: "The sons of Shobal: Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon: Aiah, and Anah" (1Ch 1:40).

A Son of Jerahmeel

The second Onam stands in the Judahite line through Hezron and Jerahmeel. "And Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam" (1Ch 2:26). His sons continue the line: "And the sons of Onam were Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai: Nadab, and Abishur" (1Ch 2:28).
