Ozias

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Ozias is a Greek form of the Hebrew name Uzziah, the Judahite king. UPDV renders the name as "Uzziah" wherever the Greek form would otherwise appear, so the figure is named directly in the Matthean genealogy as Uzziah rather than Ozias.

In the Genealogy of Christ

The name surfaces in the royal line of the genealogy at the head of Matthew: "and Asaph begot Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begot Joram; and Joram begot Uzziah; and Uzziah begot Jotham; and Jotham begot Ahaz; and Ahaz begot Hezekiah" (Mt 1:8-9). The name occupies two consecutive begettings — first as the son in verse 8, then as the father in verse 9. The placement situates Uzziah within the post-Solomonic kings of Judah, between Joram and Jotham, fixing him as one of the named royal links between David and the exile in the genealogy's first section.
