Peleth

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two men named Peleth appear in scripture, one as the father of a participant in the wilderness revolt and one as a Jerahmeelite descendant in the Chronicler's genealogies.

A Reubenite, father of On

The first stands at the head of the Korah rebellion, named only by his son. The narrative groups the conspirators: "Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took [men]" (Nu 16:1). Peleth himself does not act in the story; his name fixes On's tribal placement among the sons of Reuben who joined Korah against Moses and Aaron.

Son of Jonathan in the Jerahmeelite line

The second appears in the genealogy of Judah through Jerahmeel: "And the sons of Jonathan: Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel" (1Ch 2:33). The notice gives nothing beyond the name and its place in the family register.
