Penitence

Penitence is the inward sorrow over wrongdoing that turns a person back toward God, expressed in changed mind, contrite heart, and open acknowledgment of guilt. Scripture treats it as inseparable from a humble admission of specific sins and a forsaking of the conduct that prompted them.
