Phuvah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The figure traditionally known as Phuvah (also Pua, Puah) appears in UPDV as Puvah and Puah, a son of Issachar and the head of one of the four Issacharite clans. He is named in three parallel genealogies of the tribes of Israel.

Son of Issachar

In the list of those who came down with Jacob to Egypt, Puvah is named second among Issachar's sons:

"And the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puvah, and Jashub, and Shimron." (Ge 46:13).

The Chronicler's parallel genealogy gives the same four sons, with the variant spelling Puah:

"And of the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puah, Jashub, and Shimron, four." (1Ch 7:1).

Head of the Punite Family

In the wilderness census of Numbers, Puvah is recorded not only as a son of Issachar but as the ancestor of the Punite clan:

"The sons of Issachar after their families: [of] Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the family of the Punites;" (Nu 26:23).

The Punites are accordingly his descendants — one of the named subdivisions of Issachar carried into the tribal muster.
