Pochereth

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Pochereth is named in the UPDV under the compound form Pochereth-hazzebaim, the ancestor of one of the families that came back to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity. The name appears only in the parallel returnee registers of Ezra and Nehemiah, and only as a clan-head whose descendants are counted.

A Returning Family

In the Ezra register the line reads, "the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth-hazzebaim, the sons of Ami" (Ezra 2:57). Nehemiah preserves the same list with one neighboring variant: "the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth-hazzebaim, the sons of Amon" (Neh 7:59). The family is grouped with the descendants of Solomon's servants in both texts; Pochereth-hazzebaim's individual story is not given.
