Putiel

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Putiel is named once, identified only by the marriage of his daughter to the priestly line. The single notice sits inside the genealogical summary that closes the Levite roll in Exodus 6.

Father-in-Law of Eleazar

The text places Putiel in the priestly genealogy through one daughter: "And Eleazar Aaron's son took himself one of the daughters of Putiel as wife; and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the Levites according to their families" (Ex 6:25). The marriage links Putiel's house to Aaron's through Eleazar; the son of that marriage is Phinehas. No further information about Putiel himself is given — he is named only as the father from whom Eleazar's wife and Phinehas's mother comes.
