Riphath

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Riphath appears only in the Table of Nations as one of the three sons of Gomer, grandson of Japheth. The name surfaces twice in the genealogies, with a textual variant between the two passages.

A Son of Gomer

In the Genesis genealogy he stands second among Gomer's sons: "And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah" (Gen 10:3). The chronicler's parallel preserves the same three-name list but with a different middle entry: "And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Diphath, and Togarmah" (1 Chr 1:6). The two forms — Riphath and Diphath — refer to the same figure; the genealogies otherwise agree on the order and on the flanking brothers Ashkenaz and Togarmah.

Nothing further is said of him. He is a name in the lineage descending from Japheth through Gomer, set alongside his brothers as one branch of the post-flood peoples.
