Rissah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Rissah is one of the wilderness encampments listed in the itinerary of the Israelites between Sinai and the plains of Moab. It appears only in the Numbers travel-list, named twice — once as a place arrived at and once as a place departed from.

A Camping Place in the Wilderness

The itinerary records Israel coming into Rissah after Libnah and leaving it for Kehelathah: "And they journeyed from Libnah, and encamped in Rissah" (Num 33:21); "And they journeyed from Rissah, and encamped in Kehelathah" (Num 33:22). Nothing further is said of the place — no event, no monument, no incident. It stands in the chain of stages between the wilderness south of Sinai and the later movements toward Edom, marked simply by arrival and departure.
