Romamti-Ezer

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Romamti-ezer is one of the fourteen sons of Heman, the king's seer, listed among the singers set apart for service in the house of Yahweh under David. He appears twice in the same chapter — once in the roster of Heman's sons, and once as the head of the twenty-fourth division when the singers are organized by lot.

Son of Heman, Singer in the House of Yahweh

The genealogy of the singers names him in his place among Heman's sons: "Of Heman; the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth" (1 Chr 25:4). The text describes the function of the whole roster: "All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of Yahweh, with cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God; Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman being under the order of the king" (1 Chr 25:5-6). Romamti-ezer's office is established here: a son of Heman, trained under his father's hand for song in the temple, accompanied by cymbals, psalteries, and harps.

When the singers are then divided by lot into twenty-four courses, he becomes the head of one of them: "for the four and twentieth to Romamtiezer, his sons and his brothers, twelve" (1 Chr 25:31). The course bears his name, and his sons and brothers — twelve in number — serve under him in the rotation of the temple song.
