Sabta

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Sabta is one of the sons of Cush listed in the Table of Nations, named only in the two parallel genealogies. The two passages preserve the same lineage with a small difference of spelling — "Sabtah" in Genesis and "Sabta" in Chronicles.

A Son of Cush

In the Genesis genealogy he stands among five sons of Cush: "And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan" (Gen 10:7). The chronicler's parallel restates the same five names with the order intact: "And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raama, and Sabteca. And the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan" (1 Chr 1:9). Sabta and Sabtah are two forms of the same name.

Nothing further is said of him. He stands in the lineage as one of Cush's sons, set between Havilah and Raamah, alongside his brother Sabteca whose name closes the list.
