Samlah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Samlah of Masrekah is one of the early kings of Edom listed in the parallel Genesis and Chronicles rosters. He is named four times — twice for his accession after Hadad's death, twice for his own death and Shaul's accession after him.

Accession After Hadad

In the Edomite king-list of Genesis 36, Samlah enters between Hadad and Shaul. "And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead" (Gen 36:36). The same accession-formula reappears in the Chronicles parallel: "And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead" (1Ch 1:47). Samlah is anchored to Masrekah as his place-of-origin, and the Hadad-died / Samlah-reigned pair is the formula by which he enters the list.

Death and Succession by Shaul

The closing notice on Samlah is given in identical terms in both rosters. "And Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth by the River reigned in his stead" (Gen 36:37). The Chronicles parallel restates it word for word: "And Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth by the River reigned in his stead" (1Ch 1:48). Shaul of Rehoboth-by-the-River replaces him by the same formula that brought him in. Beyond his Masrekah origin, his accession after Hadad, and his replacement by Shaul, nothing further is told about him in the canon. [ABSOLUTE]
