Semachiah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Semachiah is named once in scripture, in the roster of the Korahite gatekeepers attached to the house of Obed-edom. He is listed among the sons of Shemaiah, alongside brothers described as "valiant men": "The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brothers were valiant men, Elihu, and Semachiah" (1Chr 26:7).

Among the Gatekeepers

The setting is the Davidic organization of the temple gatekeepers in 1 Chronicles 26. Semachiah's place is in a household marked by competence — the family is grouped under Shemaiah, the household is described as men of strength, and the role to which the chapter assigns the wider line is the keeping of the gates. Semachiah's name appears at the end of the list, one of seven brothers gathered into the duty.
