Sepulchre
Sepulchre is the older English word for a grave or tomb — the burying place hewn into rock, dug into the earth, or set in caves, gardens, and family plots where the bodies of the dead were laid. The vocabulary covers the whole machinery of burial: the bier, the spices, the closing stone, the seal, the inscribed pillar, and the legal uncleanness of contact with the grave.
