Shaaph
Two men named Shaaph appear in the Calebite genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2 — both connected to Caleb, but through different lines and at different generational depths. The shared name is the only point of contact between them.
Son of Jahdai
The first Shaaph stands in a list of six brothers descending from Jahdai, named in the Calebite section of the genealogy: "And the sons of Jahdai: Regem, and Jothan, and Geshan, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph" (1Ch 2:47). He is the last in the order, with no further notice given of him.
Son of Caleb by Maacah
The second Shaaph is set apart by both his mother and his offspring. He is born to Caleb's concubine Maacah and is identified by the town his line founds: "She bore also Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbena, and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was Achsah" (1Ch 2:49). Where the first Shaaph is only a name in a brother-list, this one is recorded as the founder-figure of Madmannah, his name carried by the place his descendants settle.
