Shamir

Topics · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Shamir attaches to two places and one person — a town in the southern hill-country of Judah, a town in the hill-country of Ephraim where the judge Tola lived and was buried, and a Levite son of Micah.

A Town in the Hill-Country of Judah

In the allotment of Judah, Shamir is listed among the hill-country towns: "And in the hill-country, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh," (Jos 15:48).

A Town in the Hill-Country of Ephraim

A second Shamir lies north, in Ephraimite territory, and is the home and burial place of one of the judges. "And after Abimelech, there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir" (Jdg 10:1-2).

A Levite

A third Shamir appears in the Levitical genealogy of David's priestly courses, among the descendants of Uzziel: "The sons of Uzziel, Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir" (1 Chr 24:24).
