Shammoth

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Shammoth is one of David's warriors, named in the Chronicler's roll of the mighty men. The parallel list in 2 Samuel records the same warrior under the slightly different form Shammah, with a corresponding shift in his town-name as well.

Shammoth the Harorite in the Chronicles List

The Chronicler introduces the catalogue with a header — "Also the mighty men of the armies" — and after Asahel and Elhanan, places Shammoth: "Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite" (1Ch 11:27). His placement immediately after Beth-lehem-derived Elhanan and before Helez the Pelonite fixes him in the early third of the list.

Shammah the Harodite in the Samuel Parallel

Samuel's roll keeps the same neighbouring names but spells both his name and his gentilic differently: "Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite" (2Sa 23:25). The variation is double — Shammoth/Shammah for the warrior, Harorite/Harodite for the place — but the position in the list is the same, and the umbrella treats the two notices as references to one man.
