Shapham

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Shapham appears once in the UPDV, named among the chiefs of the tribe of Gad who settled in the highland country of Bashan east of the Jordan.

Second Chief of Gad in Bashan

In the Chronicler's roll of Gadite leaders, Shapham stands in second position, immediately after Joel the chief: "Joel the chief, and Shapham the second, and Janai, and Shaphat in Bashan" (1Ch 5:12). The verse fixes him within a four-name list of clan heads whose territory lay in Bashan, the upland region the tribe of Gad shared with the half-tribe of Manasseh after the conquest of the Transjordan. Nothing further of his life or line is recorded.
