Shebaniah

People · Updated 2026-05-04

Shebaniah is a name borne by several men in the post-exilic and Davidic worship texts. The verses that mention the name belong to two clusters: a priest who blew the trumpets before the ark in David's day, and a small group of Levites and priests who served alongside Nehemiah at the renewal of the covenant.

A Priest in David's Procession

When David brought the ark to Jerusalem, Shebaniah is named among the priests assigned to sound the trumpets in front of it. "And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, blew the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark" (1Ch 15:24). The role places him within the ordered ranks of priestly musicians and gatekeepers established for the ark's transit.

A Levite at Nehemiah's Confession

In Nehemiah's great day of confession, a Shebaniah stands among the Levites who lead Israel in crying out to Yahweh. "Then stood up on the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God" (Ne 9:4). A second list in the same chapter, summoning the people to bless Yahweh, again includes the name: "Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, [and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless Yahweh your⁺ God from everlasting to everlasting; and let them bless your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise" (Ne 9:5). The same Levite is one of those who set their seal to the covenant: "and their brothers, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan," (Ne 10:10).

A Priest at the Sealing of the Covenant

A different Shebaniah appears among the priests who likewise sealed the covenant with Nehemiah. The list of priestly signatories reads, "Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch," (Ne 10:4). When the heads of the priestly fathers' houses are recounted in the days of Joiakim, the same priestly line surfaces in the genealogical roll: "of Malluchi, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph;" (Ne 12:14).

A Second Levitical Signatory

Yet another Shebaniah, distinguished from the Levite of Ne 9 and 10:10, signs the covenant in the following list of Levites: "Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah," (Ne 10:12). The shared name across separate signatory lists shows how common the name was among the Levitical and priestly families gathered around Nehemiah for the covenant renewal.
