Shecaniah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two priests carry the name Shecaniah in the UPDV: one heads a priestly course in David's organization of temple service, and another stands in a roster of trusted priests under Hezekiah's reform.

A Priestly Course Under David

When David assigns the priestly courses by lot, Shecaniah falls in the tenth position: "the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah," (1Ch 24:11). The notice places him among the heads of the twenty-four divisions established to organize priestly service.

A Priest Under Hezekiah

A second Shecaniah appears in the administrative roster of Hezekiah's restoration of priestly support. He is listed among the men placed in trusted office in the priestly cities to distribute the contributions: "And under him were Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their office of trust, to give to their brothers by courses, to the great as well as to the small:" (2Ch 31:15). His role is administrative — apportioning the gathered provisions evenhandedly to fellow priests across their courses.
