Shemiramoth
Two Levites bear the name Shemiramoth — a musician of David's day who plays at the bringing-up of the ark, and a teacher of the law sent out under Jehoshaphat.
A Levite Musician
Shemiramoth stands among the second-rank Levitical singers and gatekeepers when David organizes the ark procession: "and with them their brothers of the second degree, Zechariah, son, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the doorkeepers" (1 Chr 15:18). At the procession itself he plays psaltery: "and Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries set to Alamoth;" (1 Chr 15:20). After the ark is set in the tent, he continues in the regular service before it: "Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with psalteries and with harps; and Asaph with cymbals, sounding aloud;" (1 Chr 16:5).
A Teaching Levite under Jehoshaphat
A second Shemiramoth appears in Jehoshaphat's reform, sent through the cities of Judah to instruct the people in the law: "and with them the Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests" (2 Chr 17:8).
