Sherebiah

People · Updated 2026-05-04

Sherebiah is a Levite who appears in the records of the post-exilic restoration under Ezra and Nehemiah. His appearances fall into two clusters: a Levite assistant to Ezra (Ezr 8:18; Ezr 8:24; Ne 8:7; Ne 9:4; Ne 9:5) and a Levite who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah (Ne 10:12; Ne 12:8; Ne 12:24). Across both clusters Sherebiah is named on caravan-recruitment, Torah-exposition, public-prayer, covenant-sealing, and temple-thanksgiving rosters.

The Casiphia Recruit

Sherebiah enters the record as a Levitical reinforcement Ezra's caravan had been missing. The recruiting trip to Casiphia is framed as the work of God's hand: "And according to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen" (Ezr 8:18). The verse stands as an example of the divine hand for blessing — the according-to-the-good-hand-of-our-God-on- us credit-clause qualifies the whole Casiphia-recruit as the output of that hand. Sherebiah's lineage runs through Mahli back to Levi, and his contingent is tallied at eighteen heads.

Set Apart with the Treasure

When the caravan organizes itself for the journey to Jerusalem with the temple offerings, Sherebiah is placed among the priest-chiefs entrusted with the treasure: "Then I set apart twelve of the chiefs of the priests, even Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers with them" (Ezr 8:24).

The Water-Gate Exposition

At the Water-Gate reading-day Sherebiah stands on the named expositor-team that turns Ezra's reading into comprehension for the assembly: "Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people [stood] in their place" (Ne 8:7). The verse can be read from two angles. As an Ezra-side notice the thirteen-name Levite- catalogue functions as the expositor-team operating alongside the scribe's pulpit-reading; the caused-the-people-to-understand-the-law causative-verb casts their role as comprehension-producing exposition rather than re-reading, and the people-[stood]-in-their-place standing- clause holds the assembly on its feet throughout. As an instruction- side notice the same verse exhibits a particular example of spiritual teaching — the named team's Torah-exposition mission whose end is the actual understanding of the law in a standing mixed-sex assembly.

Public Prayer at the Twenty-Fourth-Day Fast

A few verses later Sherebiah appears twice on the Levite-team that leads the post-Water-Gate fast. He is on the stair-platform when the Levites cry out: "Then stood up on the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God" (Ne 9:4). And he is on the team that issues the call-to-bless: "Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, [and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless Yahweh your⁺ God from everlasting to everlasting; and let them bless your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise" (Ne 9:5). The verse exhibits the mighty name of the Lord — the let-them-bless-your- glorious-name transfer-clause turns the blessing-object onto the divine name itself, and the exalted-above- all-blessing-and-praise height-clause grades that name as standing above every blessing-and-praise response the creature can render. The plural-you imperative summons the whole returnee-assembly.

Sealing the Covenant

The second Sherebiah-grouping opens at the covenant-signing under Nehemiah, where Sherebiah is named on the Levite-list of sealers: "Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah" (Ne 10:12).

On the Returnee Levite Roster

In the catalogue of Levites who came back with Zerubbabel and Jeshua, Sherebiah is listed among the leaders: "Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, [and] Mattaniah, who was over the thanksgiving, he and his brothers" (Ne 12:8). Mattaniah's thanksgiving-oversight clause is attached in the same breath as Sherebiah's name on the roster.

Chief of the Levites at the Thanksgiving Watches

In the closing register of Levitical leadership Sherebiah is named a chief of the Levites assigned to the thanksgiving-watches: "And the chiefs of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brothers next to them, to praise and give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, watch next to watch" (Ne 12:24). The watch-next-to-watch arrangement is anchored to the commandment of David.
