Shibah

Places · Updated 2026-05-08

Shibah is the name Isaac gave to a well he dug in the valley of Gerar, recorded once in UPDV at Genesis 26:33: "And he called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba to this day." A footnote in UPDV notes that Shibah means "oath" or "seven."

The naming links the well to the prior oath sworn between Isaac and Abimelech (Genesis 26:31) and explains the etymology of Beer-sheba, the city that grew up at that location.
