Shimea

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Shimea is borne by four distinct men in the UPDV — two of them in the immediate family of King David, and two among the Levites of 1 Chronicles 6. The same individuals turn up under variant spellings (Shammua, Shimeah, Shimma) in other passages, and the umbrella collects every place where the form "Shimea" itself stands in the text.

Shimea Son of David

In the genealogy of David's Jerusalem-born sons, Shimea is the firstborn of the four children of Bath-shua: "and these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel" (1 Chr 3:5). The list places him alongside Solomon and Nathan as a son of David and Bath-shua.

Shimea Brother of David

A second Shimea is the brother of David and the father of one of David's giant-killers: "And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him" (1 Chr 20:7). The verse identifies Shimea by his relation to David and tracks the slaying of a Philistine champion to his son Jonathan.

Shimea the Merarite Levite

A third Shimea appears in the Merarite Levitical genealogy of 1 Chronicles 6, slotted into a four-generation chain: "Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son" (1 Chr 6:30). The verse gives nothing more than the name and its position in the line of descent.

Shimea Grandfather of Asaph

The fourth Shimea is named in the lineage of the singer Asaph: "And his brother Asaph, who stood on his right hand, even Asaph the son of Berechiah, the son of Shimea," (1 Chr 6:39). Through Berechiah, Shimea is Asaph's paternal grandfather. The notice is part of the larger Levitical roster establishing the descent of the temple musicians.
