Shiphrah

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Shiphrah is one of the two Hebrew midwives whose names are preserved in the opening chapter of Exodus.

A Hebrew Midwife in Egypt

She is named, with Puah, at the moment Pharaoh begins his attempt to suppress Israelite male births: "And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah" (Ex 1:15). The naming itself is striking against the surrounding narrative: the king of Egypt is unnamed in the verse, but the two midwives are named.
