Shuah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two men bear the name Shuah. The first is the sixth son Abraham fathers by Keturah; the second is a brother of Chelub in the Judahite line, where the spelling appears as Shuhah.

Son of Abraham by Keturah

Shuah closes the list of sons that Keturah bears to Abraham: "And she bore him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah" (Gen 25:2). The Chronicler repeats the same six-name catalogue and adds the relational note that pins down Keturah's status: "And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bore Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba, and Dedan" (1Ch 1:32). Shuah is therefore one of the six "sons of the concubine" through whom Abraham's descent reaches the Arabian and trans-Jordan east.

Brother of Chelub

A second Shuah surfaces inside the Judahite genealogy of Chronicles, with the spelling Shuhah: "And Chelub the brother of Shuhah begot Mehir, who was the father of Eshton" (1Ch 4:11). The line runs Shuhah's brother Chelub → Mehir → Eshton, embedding this Shuhah in a Judahite family tree distinct from Abraham's son.
