Shuham

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Shuham is a son of Dan, named in the wilderness census as the head of the only Danite clan, the Shuhamites. The book of Genesis records the same figure under the alternate form Hushim.

The Son of Dan

The census in the plains of Moab gives the Danite line in a single sentence: "These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families" (Nu 26:42). Dan is unusual in the list — only one family is reckoned to him, and Shuham is its eponymous head.

The Genesis form: Hushim

The migration list of Jacob's household into Egypt names the same son under a different form: "And the sons of Dan: Hushim" (Ge 46:23). The two passages converge on a single figure, with Shuham/Hushim a metathesis of the same consonants. The census later treats the descendants as one clan.
