Shuthelah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Shuthelah belongs to two figures in the line of Ephraim: an early son who heads a clan, and a later descendant in the same lineage who is the son of Zabad.

Son of Ephraim

The Numbers census of Ephraim's clans names Shuthelah as the head of one of the families: "These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites" (Num 26:35). The next verse traces a sub-clan from him: "And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites" (Num 26:36). The Chronicler's parallel genealogy of Ephraim opens with the same name: "And the sons of Ephraim: Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eleadah his son, and Tahath his son" (1 Chr 7:20).

Son of Zabad

The same Chronicler's lineage continues into a second generation, naming a later Shuthelah further down the descent through Zabad: "and Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath who were born in the land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle" (1 Chr 7:21).
