Silas
Silas, called Silvanus in the long form of his name, surfaces in the UPDV epistles as a co-worker of Paul and a trusted intermediary for Peter. The letters of Paul name him alongside Timothy in their opening salutations, and the close of 1 Peter identifies him as the faithful brother through whom Peter writes to his readers.
Co-Worker With Paul
Paul names Silvanus as one of the preachers who proclaimed the Son of God among the Corinthians, paired with himself and Timothy: "For God's Son, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you⁺ by us, [even] by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yes and no, but in him is yes" (2 Cor 1:19). Silvanus' standing in the team is not that of a delegate but of a fellow proclaimer — the witness Paul offers about Christ's reliability rests on the shared testimony of all three.
Co-Author of the Thessalonian Letters
Both letters to the Thessalonians open by listing Silvanus alongside Paul and Timothy as senders. The first letter greets the church in the simplest of forms: "Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you⁺ and peace" (1 Thess 1:1). The second letter repeats the same triad, with the divine reference expanded to "God our Father": "Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Thess 1:1). Silvanus is not a courier appended at the end but a named sender at the head of the correspondence, sharing in the apostolic address to the congregation.
Bearer of Peter's Letter
At the close of 1 Peter, Silvanus appears in a different orbit — as Peter's chosen instrument for conveying the letter to its readers in Asia Minor: "By Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I account [him], I have written to you⁺ briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God: stand⁺ fast in it" (1 Pet 5:12). Peter vouches for him personally ("our faithful brother, as I account [him]"), and the letter's exhortation to stand fast in the true grace of God is delivered through his hand. The same Silvanus who served with Paul in Corinth and Thessalonica is here trusted by Peter to carry an apostolic exhortation to a different field of churches.
