Sippai

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Sippai is one of the Philistine giants killed in David's wars, slain by Sibbecai the Hushathite at Gezer. The parallel notice in Samuel records the same event under the alternate name Saph.

Killed at Gezer

The Chronicler reports the engagement plainly: "And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Sippai, of the sons of the giant; and they were subdued" (1Ch 20:4). Sippai is identified as one of "the sons of the giant" — the same Philistine warrior-stock to which Goliath belongs in the surrounding accounts — and his death at the hand of Sibbecai breaks the Philistine push at Gezer.

The Samuel parallel: Saph at Gob

The Samuel narrative tells the same incident with two differences in detail: "And it came to pass after this, that there was again war with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was of the sons of the giant" (2Sa 21:18). The slayer (Sibbecai the Hushathite) and the descent ("of the sons of the giant") match exactly; the giant's name appears as Saph rather than Sippai, and the locale as Gob rather than Gezer.
