Sirah

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Sirah is the name of a well, fixed in scripture by a single moment in the aftermath of David's parley with Abner.

The Well from which Abner was Recalled

The well marks the point at which Joab's messengers caught up with Abner after he had left David in peace: "And when Joab came out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah: but David didn't know it" (2Sa 3:26). Three details fix the well's role in the story. It is far enough from David's presence that Abner had already reached it before being intercepted. The recall was Joab's act, not David's. And the closing clause — "but David didn't know it" — uses the well as the geographic hinge between the king's diplomacy and his nephew's private vengeance, which falls on Abner in the verses that follow.
