Slavery

Slavery covers the legal, social, and household status of bondservants in the biblical world — distinguished from hired service by the Greek terms doulos and diakonos — together with the Mosaic regulations on kidnapping, fugitives, debt-bondage, sabbath rest, marriage, and emancipation. The same heading carries Israel's own bondage in Egypt and Babylon, the figurative use of slave-language in Christian discipleship, and the various instances of cruelty and kindness shown to slaves throughout scripture.
