Stacte

Topics · Updated 2026-05-07

Stacte appears once in scripture, as one of the spice ingredients prescribed for the sacred incense.

An Ingredient of the Sacred Incense

In the instructions for the holy compound to be burned in the tent of meeting, Yahweh names four aromatics by name: "And Yahweh said to Moses, Take to you sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each there will be a like weight" (Ex 30:34). Stacte stands first in the list, with onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense added in equal measure to make the incense reserved for sanctuary use.
