Tahan

Two men named Tahan appear in the Ephraimite line. The first is a son of Ephraim, head of the Tahanite family in the wilderness census; the second is a later descendant in the Chronicler's genealogy of the same tribe.

Tahan, Son of Ephraim

In the second wilderness census, the families of Ephraim are enumerated by their fathers, and Tahan stands among the founding heads: "These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites" (Nu 26:35). The clan that bears his name — the Tahanites — is reckoned among the divisions of Ephraim at this stage of the wilderness wandering.

Tahan in the Ephraimite Genealogy

A second Tahan surfaces several generations later in the Chronicler's tribal record. The line runs father-to-son through the Ephraimite descent: "And Rephah was his son, and Resheph and Telah his son, and Tahan his son" (1Ch 7:25). The position is well downstream of the wilderness Tahan; the umbrella collects both bearers of the name within the same tribal line.
