Tahpenes

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Tahpenes is a queen of Egypt named in connection with Hadad the Edomite during the reign of Solomon.

A Queen of Egypt

Hadad's standing in Pharaoh's court is fixed by his marriage to the sister of Pharaoh's own wife, "the sister of Tahpenes the queen" (1 Ki 11:19). The kinship runs through her: she is the queen, and her sister becomes Hadad's wife.

Her household connection extends into the next generation. The sister of Tahpenes "bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh" (1 Ki 11:20). The boy is raised inside the palace and counted among the royal sons, with Tahpenes herself doing the weaning.
