Tanhumeth

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Tanhumeth is named only as the father of Seraiah, one of the captains who came to Gedaliah at Mizpah after the fall of Jerusalem.

Father of Seraiah

When the captains of the forces hear that Nebuchadnezzar has appointed Gedaliah over the land, they gather to him at Mizpah. The roll lists "Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men" (2 Ki 25:23).

The parallel account in Jeremiah carries the same name through the same incident: "Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men" (Jer 40:8). Tanhumeth himself never speaks or acts; he is the patronymic by which his son Seraiah is identified at this moment.
