Tertius

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Tertius is the writer who put Paul's letter to the Romans into ink. He inserts a single first-person greeting of his own into the closing salutations of the letter.

The Writer of the Letter

The greeting is brief and self-identifying: "I Tertius, who write the letter, greet you⁺ in the Lord" (Ro 16:22). It stands inside the cluster of personal greetings at the end of Romans, between Paul's coworkers and the household of Gaius (Ro 16:21-23). The verse names the role he plays — he is the one who writes the letter — and binds his greeting to the same Lord whose name has shaped the whole epistle.
