Title, to Real Estate

Title to real estate in scripture is treated less as private dominion than as a holding under Yahweh, who claims the land as his own and assigns it to households as inheritance. The cluster of laws covers the original divine grant, sale and redemption, written deeds and witnessed conveyance, leases, debt-sales, the sabbath and jubilee returns, dower rights for widows and unmarried women, the king's portion and the priests' portion, and the ancient landmark stones that fence each household's share.
