Ucal

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Ucal is named once in scripture, in the superscription that opens the words of Agur in Proverbs 30. He appears as one of the addressees of the oracle, paired with Ithiel.

Addressee of Agur's Oracle

The opening line introduces both speaker and audience: "The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; The oracle. The [noble] man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal" (Prov 30:1). The phrasing names Ithiel twice and adds Ucal once, so the speech is directed to two hearers, with Ithiel placed in the foreground.

What Agur says to them opens with self-deprecation: "Surely I am more brutish than any man, And don't have the understanding of man" (Prov 30:2). That is the first line of the speech Ucal is positioned to receive — a confession of unlearning that frames the proverbs that follow. Beyond his name in the superscription, no further information about Ucal is given in the text.
