"Umpire" is UPDV's rendering of the Hebrew term (KJV "daysman") at Job 9:33. In that verse Job laments, "If only there were an umpire between us / That might lay his hand on us both." The image is of a mediating arbitrator who could place a hand on both parties — Job and God — to bring them together for judgment.

The word appears only at this verse in UPDV and captures Job's longing for an impartial third party who could adjudicate his case before God.
