Upharsin

Topics · Updated 2026-05-06

UPHARSIN is the fourth word in the writing on the wall at Belshazzar's feast. The umbrella collects the inscription itself and the interpretation Daniel gives for the matching root.

The Writing on the Wall

Daniel reads the inscription verbatim. "And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" (Dan 5:25). The four-word sequence is preserved as it stands; UPHARSIN closes the row.

Divided

Daniel's interpretation moves from the inscribed UPHARSIN (the plural) to its singular cognate, and the interpretation is keyed to the root meaning "to divide." "PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians" (Dan 5:28). The verdict on Belshazzar's kingdom is the umbrella's content: divided, and handed over.
