Uzzia

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Uzzia appears once in scripture, listed among the mighty men who fought for David. He is identified by the place from which he comes rather than by family or deed.

One of David's Mighty Men

The Chronicler opens the broader muster with a heading: "Also the mighty men of the armies: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Beth-lehem" (1Ch 11:26). The list runs through dozens of names, with each warrior tagged by patronymic, hometown, or both. Uzzia falls deep in the tail end of this roll: "Hanan the son of Maacah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite, Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite" (1Ch 11:43-45).

The sole identifier is "the Ashterathite" — Uzzia is from Ashtaroth, the trans-Jordanian town in the territory once held by Og of Bashan. The text records nothing further: no exploit, no kin, no later mention. He is named because he stood among David's warriors, and the Chronicler preserves the warriors by name.
