Wonderful

"Wonderful" appears in the UPDV as a name — a term applied both to the angel of Yahweh and, in prophetic promise, to the coming Messiah.

The Name of the Angel of Yahweh

When Manoah pressed the divine messenger for his name, the response deflected without denying: "And the angel of Yahweh said to him, Why do you ask after my name, seeing it is wonderful?" (Jud 13:18). The name is not withheld out of obscurity but declared as belonging to the category of the wonderful — beyond ordinary naming.

A Name of the Messiah

Isaiah's birth-oracle gathers several names onto the promised child: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulder: and his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isa 9:6). "Wonderful" stands first in the sequence, carrying the same connotation as the angel's self-description in Judges — a name that marks the bearer as beyond the ordinary.
